Virginia M. Walters

Virginia (Mauro, Chester) Walters entered into eternal life with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, November 11, 2017, Veteran’s Day, with her daughters by her side.  In passing, she is reunited with many Veteran family members, including her husbands, John Chester and Donald Walters; her three brothers, Jim, Nuncie, and Manney Mauro; her father Dominic; and her son, Douglas Walters. Virginia was born in Pennsylvania in 1924 where her parents, Italia and Dominic Mauro, emigrated from Italy.  The Mauros moved to join their extended family in the Finger Lakes, and Virginia spent the rest of her life in Phelps, developing lasting love and friendship within the community.  She is best remembered for her beautiful voice, having sung in many plays, concerts, weddings and church services; and her prominent activity in the Phelps community, including active membership in the St. Francis Church and Food Cupboard, the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, and the Rosary Society; and her expert baking and candy-making, which she shared with her family and friends.  Virginia also volunteered at House of John, served as a Religion Teacher/Coordinator, volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Choir. Virginia was employed by Security Trust Company, Phelps branch, from which she retired, and later worked at Whitson’s Pharmacy. She is survived by her two daughters, Cheryl Chester (Theresa Cauller) of Avon, CT and Marilyn Chester DeRuyter (Mart VanKirk) of Phelps; two grandchildren,  Aaron DeRuyter (Diane) of Farmington, and Addie Klaehn (Sam) of Clifton Springs; and four great grandchildren: Bella, Maxwell, Nolan and Lily; and her son-in-law, Joseph DeRuyter of Victor.  She is also survived by Donald’s two daughters and many grandchildren.  She was very proud of her Italian heritage, her Roman Catholic faith and of her family.

Thank you to the staff at Elm Manor who doted on her and a special thank you to the House of John for their compassion and spiritual guidance in the final days of Mom’s journey.

Friends may call on Wednesday November 15, from 4-6pm at the Cheney Funeral Home 70 Main Street Phelps.
