Obituary of Raymond Finewood

 

Clifton Springs, Raymond Finewood, age 98, died on Friday June 2, 2017 at Clifton Springs Hospital & Clinic.

 

There will be no prior calling hours. A mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday June 5, 10am at St. Francis Catholic Church in Phelps with Rev. John Gagnier officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Finewood was born on October 22, 1918 in Newark,NY the son of the late Philip and Beatrice Bommlyn Firewood. He worked in the service department at Hoselton in Rochester. He also worked at Walt Dennis Construction for several years. He retired from Bordens in Lyons where he worked as a Millwright. He was a member of the Rochester Operating Engineers Local 832 and Rochester Millwrights Local 1163. He was an Army Veteran of WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star. He spent most of his war time in North Africa and France and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.  He was a past member of the Phelps American Legion. He was a member of the NRA and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed target shooting. In 1950 he built his own home. He built a winepress and was a wine maker for 20 years and raised and used his own grapes for making wine. He built his own farm tractor and a trailer to tow behind. He took a trip for 2 months in 1972 and traveled to Alaska.

 

He is survived by his daughter Jacqueline (Daniel) McLaughlin of Newark

Son Ronald (Debbie) Finewood of Marion 

Step-daughter Jackie (Paul) Sheerer of Hawaii 

6 grandchildren Sean, Toby and Jody McLaughlin.

Ashley (Adam) Whalen, Kaytlynn (Daniel) Buyck and Chelsea Westley.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary, sister Virginia Zulauf
