After completing service, he entered Cornell University and graduated in 1958 with a degree in Agriculture Economics. He worked 7 years as a case worker for Herkimer County Social Services. He then worked for the NYS Department of Labor as an employment interviewer for 25 years in Wellsville, NY and Canandaigua, NY. He retired in 1991.

Robert married Judith Vaughn in June, 1959 and together they lovingly raised their three children. He always put his family first and spent many hours supporting his children's sports, music and other interests. He was an active and faithful member of the United Church of Phelps and served on the Trustees and Missions committees. He enjoyed horse racing and playing slots at the casino. He was an avid gardener and generously shared his produce with family and friends. He also took pleasure in planting flower gardens and had a yard thriving with beautiful plants and flowers for all to enjoy. Robert was a talented athlete in his younger years and continued to love coaching others and watching any and all sports on TV, although he especially enjoyed routing for his favorite teams. He coached Little League and women's softball for over 20 years. He also loved to travel and went on many senior bus trips with his beloved wife.

Above all, Robert enjoyed spending time with his family, children and grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to share anything that he had, but especially, his loving, generous and positive spirit with everyone about him. He was also known to be kind and friendly to anyone he made acquaintance with and always went out of his way to let others know they were appreciated. He was fun loving, humble and could laugh at himself and life and was a great role model to all who knew him. His family will miss him greatly but his spirit will live on in their hearts forever.
