Canandaigua, New York
Karen Marie Chapman, 49, originally of Webster, NY, and most recently of Canandaigua, NY, passed away on May 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Karen was born in Rochester, NY, on April 20, 1977, and was adopted by William and Patricia Black. She grew up in Irondequoit, NY, and graduated from West Irondequoit High School, where she was a standout basketball player.
After high school, Karen moved to Jacksonville, NC, where her oldest daughter, Krystal Bradley, was born. She later returned to Rochester when Krystal was a toddler and eventually settled in Webster, NY, where she lived for many years and welcomed two more children, Caitlin and Christopher Chapman.
Karen was a generous person who went out of her way to help others. She had a kind heart, a giving spirit, and never met a stranger. A dedicated and hardworking woman, Karen gave her all to every job she held. She was never one to sit still.
In her free time, Karen enjoyed spending time with her children and watching TV, especially Downton Abbey. She also loved yard work and took pride in making her yard the best-looking one on the block. During her illness, Karen found peace sitting along the shores of Canandaigua Lake, reflecting and spending time with her close friend, Terry Richardson.
Karen’s life was not always easy. At times, it was extraordinarily difficult. Yet no matter the challenge, she persevered. We can all take a lesson from her tenacity and courage, especially in the way she faced cancer. A warrior to the end, Karen fought with remarkable strength and determination, showing courage and resilience throughout her battle.
Karen was predeceased by her father, William Black, and her niece, Gianna Chapman. In addition to her children — Krystal, Caitlin, and Christopher — Karen is survived by her mother, Patricia Black; her brother, Rich Black (Heather); and her nieces, Lily, Quinn, and Rorie Black. The number of lives she touched is far too great to list here. A special thank you to Terry for standing by Karen’s side during the most difficult time of her life.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 1PM-5PM at The Links at Greystone, 1400 Atlantic Ave, Walworth NY 14568.
Final arrangements will be handled by Cheney Funeral Home in Phelps.
In lieu of flowers, please watch out for one another and treat others the way Karen treated everyone she met — with love, kindness, and genuine concern.
