Mary Lou Vollmer

–

Phelps, New York

Mary-Lou Pratt Vollmer, aged 92, passed away on February 29, 2024. Born in Syracuse, New York, to Minot and Dorothy Pratt, both of whom preceded her in death, Mary-Lou carved a remarkable path for herself. A proud alumna of Syracuse University School of Education, where she earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees, she embarked on a fulfilling career in early childhood education before dedicating 28 years to nurturing her five beloved children.

Her life journey with William (Bill) Vollmer, her cherished husband of 64 years, began on August 16, 1958. Together, they embraced the joys of parenthood and later ventured to various locales, including Venice, Florida, and Mebane, North Carolina, ultimately settling in the serene surroundings of Canandaigua, New York. The Vollmer's shared a passion for travel, exploring the United States in their RV, with Mary-Lou finding pleasure in reading, needlework, and the wonders of nature. Above all, she treasured her children as her greatest blessings.

An engaged participant in her faith communities, Mary-Lou's voice enriched the choirs of Phelps United Church (NY), Venice Presbyterian Church (FL), and Hawfields Presbyterian Church (NC). Her talents extended to performing with the Sweet Adelines and playing the organ, reflecting a life rich in diverse interests.

Mary-Lou leaves behind a legacy of love and is mourned by her children, Sue DeHond (Steve), Lori Hercyk (Darren), Jim Vollmer (Deb), Cyndi West (Chuck), and David Vollmer (Monica); 13 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and her niece Diane Chermak (Mark), and nephew Kevin Brummett (Cindy). She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her sister-in-law Shirley Smolenski, brothers-in-law Bert and Donald Vollmer, and nephew Curtis Darling.

In honoring Mary-Lou's wishes for cremation, the family will hold a private service. They suggest memorial contributions to Habitat for Humanity.

The Vollmer family expresses profound gratitude to Mary-Lou's caregivers for their exceptional support in her final years. Special thanks are extended to aides Belinda Lancaster, Jill, Paige, Courtney, Sam, Tiffany, Julie, Amy, Francesca, Judy, Emily, Theresa, and Jodie for their compassionate care.

As we bid farewell to Mary-Lou, we find solace in knowing she continues to watch over us, just as she lovingly did throughout her life. Heaven indeed has gained an angel.
