Obituary of Florence Beatrice Peck

Phelps – Florence B. Peck died Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the Living Center North in Geneva, NY, with family by her side.  She was 92, just a few weeks before her 93rd birthday.

There will be no prior calling hours. Private burial will be in South Lyons Cemetery at the convenience of her family.

Florence was born in 1929 in Elmhurst, NY, the daughter of the late James Harold Sr. and Florence Jacoby Conover. A 1946 graduate of Forest Hills High School, Forest Hills, NY, she continued her education at Cornell University, where she was a member of Alpha Xi Delta. She graduated in 1950 with a B.S. from the College of Home Economics, with majors in Institutional Management and Nutrition.  At Cornell, she met her future husband Nathan, whom she married in 1952 at the Phelps Presbyterian Church (now the United Church of Phelps). After moving several times, they settled back on the Peck family farm in Phelps and raised their six children. In their later years, she and Nathan enjoyed traveling the country, and they happily celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary. Florence was a charter member of the Phelps Community Historical Society, an original member of the United Church of Phelps, as well as a Girl Scout Troop leader and an involved mom in so many of her children’s school activities.

Florence will be remembered for her warmth, her pride in her family, her kindness. Born in NYC, educated in Ithaca, and having raised her family in Phelps, Florence was proud to be, in her words, a true New Yorker (pronounced “Noo Yawker”). She regaled family with stories of riding her bicycle in the streets of Queens and working in Brooklyn with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge. Florence had a competitive spirit, enjoying word puzzles, Wheel of Fortune, the Yankees, and the Bills – maybe this is their year.

Florence was predeceased by her husband, Nathan H. Peck Sr. She is survived by her children, Nathan H. (Robin) Peck Jr., Nancy E. (Paul) Casler, Henry R. (Leigh) Peck, Walter G. (Barbara) Peck, Virginia A. Peck, and Alice P. (Christopher) Hoover; her “baby” brother, James H. (Melinda Turken) Conover; twelve grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and many, many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Florence was extraordinarily proud of her children and their families and delighted in their accomplishments.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oaks Corners Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 54, Oaks Corners, NY 14518.
