Obituary of Joanne Sullivan
The town of Phelps, family and friends are mourning the loss of Joanne M. Sullivan who was 82 when she peacefully passed away on Friday, December 8, 2017 in the comfort of her home. Her daughter Donna, granddaughter Tiffany and longtime private nurse Gail were by her side. As a lifelong resident, Joanne loved Phelps and Phelps surely loved her.
Her Family invites you to Joanne’s Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Thursday December, 14th at 10:30 AM at St. Francis Church, Phelps, NY with Father Peter Van Lieshout officiating. Following the Mass, please join the family at Joanne’s residence, 1 Willard Avenue, Phelps NY where memories of Joanne will be shared and her life celebrated.
Joanne was born in Clifton Springs, NY on July 29, 1935. She was the daughter of the late John & Margaret Gleason Scherbyn, Sr. Many people know Joanne as Mrs. Callaway, the secretary at Midlakes High School. She was actively involved with the students and teachers and loved every moment of it. Her next venture was to be a business woman with her son, John, at The Village Restaurant. Her final chapter was being the proud owner of the landmark building and business in downtown Phelps, The Historic Phelps Hotel Restaurant, for over 20 years. Her restaurant doors were always open to celebrate any and every occasion imaginable often toasting with a Manhattan. Her daughter, Cheryl, continued to keep her doors open at the restaurant over the past five years while she battled Alzheimer’s. Joanne also owned the Sullivan Block in downtown Phelps where her office was located. People often stopped by to chat with her. She was willing to help with anything from making change for the laundromat to finding a place to live. The Phelps Chamber of Commerce honored her in 2015 with the award, “Woman of Honor”. The chamber continued that honor by placing a brick outside the gazebo in Redfield Park. Joanne was many things to many people and most importantly, always devoted to her family. She was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother and friend who will truly be missed by all. We will never forget her as she touched all of our lives with her kind, loving soul.
The family would like to give a special gratitude and thanks to the home health aides, especially Gail and Destiny, who helped fulfill her wishes to stay in her home.
