Obituary of Fredrick W. Merscher

Fredrick William Merscher of Phelps NY passed away on December 22, 2020, he was born on February 9, 1954, the son of the Late William Merscher and Shirley Alesna. Fred Graduated from Wipahu High school in Hawaii in 1972 and enlisted in the United States Navy that same year. On Christmas Eve of 1978 he married Mary Ella Piehl, his former wife who survives him and he became "Dad" to Anita (David) Peirce of Clifton Springs and Elizabeth Coon (Hans Neumeier) of Phelps. He and Mary share two grandsons, William Barr of Fairport and Nicholas Burnette of Phelps. He is survived by his brother, Dave (Marie) Merscher of Zephyrhills Florida and Newark NY. The biggest joy in Fred's life was sharing time with his grandson and best buddy Nicholas and Nick's girlfriend Rebecca Hegeman. One of his favorite things was to share the many stories of his youth and Navy career with Nick, and always leaving him with a joke or a piece of advice that only Grandpa Fred could get away with. Chief Merscher's Navy career began in 1972 in Honolulu Hawaii when he was stationed to the USS Darter and expanded throughout 20 years when he retired in 1993. He proudly served upon the USS Will Rogers, the USS Alexander Hamilton and the USS Sculpin as a Chief Machinist Mate and spent some of those years on Shore Duty as a MMC/SS stationed in Groton CT. He earned many awards and accolades throughout his career, but none more important than the way he took care of his shipmates and newbies who he had trained and took under his wing as "family". Holidays at his home were always full of the "family" members of the Navy that couldn't be home with their families; he always made room at the table for his Navy brothers. Namely Tom Gay of Hamilton Ohio, whom was his best friend and shipmate. Fred was the owner of F&M Logging and Firewood through 1996 until he moved back to Phelps. He worked for BSB Equipment rental for nearly 20 years, Fred had a niche for fixing anything that needed repair and was the "go to" throughout his entire life whenever anyone needed a bit of help. Some would say that he was their "McGyver", because he would always find a way to make things work. "EB Green it, and it's like new!" Fred was a member of the Seely B Parish Phelps American Legion post 457 and was the Post Officer from 1998-1999 as well as Sergeant At Arms for the Sons of the American Legion. He was also, for a time, an assistant scout master for the Boy Scouts of America troop 46 in Phelps NY. Freds wish was that when he left this earth, that he would be buried at sea at the International Dateline and Equator, off of a Submarine which will be granted. A true Chief of the Navy. Because of COVID Restrictions there are no funeral services at this time. There will be a Memorial Celebration for Fred as restrictions are lifted. Donations in Fred's Memory may be made the the Seely B Parish Phelps American Legion. "Rest your oars Chief, your Brothers now have your watch”
