Obituary of Marjorie M. Toner

Marjorie Marion Toner, 97, passed away on April 6, 2021 in Clifton Springs, NY, where she resided with her daughter, Patricia Rumizen, and son-in-law, Michael Rumizen. Viewing will be on Saturday, April 10, 2021 from 11am-1pm at the Cheney Funeral Home 70 Main Street in Phelps, burial funeral farewell gathering will be held at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Lindenhurst, Long Island, on Monday April 12, 2021 at 11am. Marge was born in Astoria, NY, to Mathilda and Charles Vaupel on October 19, 1923. She attended high school in Farmingdale, NY, but quit school to help support her family. She worked at Republic in the cafeteria, proudly serving those who made and assembled planes and equipment for World War II, in which her brother, Carl, and then future husband, Bill, fought valiantly. Marge wrote regularly to Bill overseas, and when he returned from the war to work in her father’s business, romance was born. They were married September 1948, and raised four children, all of whom survive her. William Patrick Toner, her beloved husband, passed away unexpectedly April 1977. Marge was an avid gardener, known as the “Flower Lady” in Medford, NY, where her gardens were admired by family, friends, and community. She received a special award from the Patchogue/Medford Chamber of Commerce for her volunteer work caring for the Chamber’s gardens. Marge enjoyed sewing, cross stitch, embroidery, and crafts. She also had exceptional skill with numbers. Marjorie is survived by her children, Nancy Weinberger, Patricia Rumizen. Marjory Chipkin, and William Toner. Her surviving descendants include grandchildren: Jennifer Rumizen Calkins, Rachel Rumizen, Allyson Rumizen Augello, David Rumizen, Dayna Chipkin Behme, Sara Chipkin, and Joshua Chipkin; great grandchildren: Dylan, Heather, Eliana, Gabriella, Emily, Alex, Madison, Trevor, Molly, Julian, and Isaac; as well as two great, great, granddaughters. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, her sisters Gladys Metzger and Catherine Vaupel, and her brother, Carl Vaupel.
