Obituary of James Vandamme

James E. VanDamme, 79, passed away peacefully at home on October 15, 2021. Jim was born on January 27, 1942 in Clifton Springs, NY. Jim was predeceased by his parents James Edward VanDamme and Marie VanDamme Allen, his step-father, Harold "Red" Allen, and his grandson Trevor James VanDamme. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Nancy Field VanDamme, his son James R. VanDamme, Newark, NY, his daughter Leslie (Jeff) Cosenza, Orchard Park, NY, his son Timothy M. VanDamme (Jessica) Phelps, NY and his daughter Alison (Kenneth) Ward, Titusville, FL; by twelve grandchildren: Jacob, Mary Katherine, Matthew, Christian (Taylor), Lauren, Sara (Cooper), Zachary, Cassandra, Gabriel, Olivia, Camden, and Shea; and by his 3 sisters, all of Phelps, NY: Carol (Corky) Maslyn, Kathy Smolinski, and Brenda Allen. Jim graduated from Phelps High School in 1960, went to work for Phelps Guardrail, setting rail along the highways of Western and Upstate New York. In 1966 he began his 32 1/2 year career at Xerox Corporation, Webster, NY, where he progressed to Product Engineer, then Project Manager, while earning his Associates Degree at R.I.T. In his younger years, Jim coached Vince Lombardi football as a means of passing on the gift of mentorship that he had received from his Junior and Senior High coaches.He was a long-standing member of the Buckhorn Gun Club and a 25-year member of Clifton Springs Country Club. Jim was instrumental in bringing the Sons of the American Legion to Post 457, Phelps, NY and was the original Sons of the American Legion, Post. 457 Commander. Not one to stay idle long, once settled in Titusville he joined the Fraternal Order of Eagles and shortly thereafter became the Bar Manager, a position he held for 15 years. Jim was a kind, loyal,humble man whose memory will be cherished by so many. A Celebration of Jim's life will be held on Friday November 5, 2021, starting at 5 pm till 9pm, at the Phelps American Legion Post 457, Main Street, Phelps, NY 14532 to which all are invited. Please attend and share your "Big Jim" stories! Donations may be made to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Sons of the American Legion,. Post 457, or Hospice of St. Francis Reflections, 1250 Grummon Place, Titusville.
